I must warn you. The smell of the mixture -- using all the banana -- is equally intoxicating. The hubs was in the kitchen making the dough together with me (we made a deal that included him with me) and we had to work hard not to place our faces, or a straw, right into it.

1 other thing I love about this recipe is where it came from.

My grandma (my father's mother ) passed out in 2008. After I started draining a lot a couple of years back, my uncle gave me her cookbook that he'd had didn't use. I've had it on my list to make several her desserts ever since.

It was a convention for my grandmother to make them every Christmas! She gave everyone a large tin of them, which has been really an effort with 6 sons.

I now know precisely how much of a feat it had been! My goodness. She made them with a traditional gaufrette iron that goes over an open flame. My dad and I had them on the cooker. They cook very fast and you have to be precise. Too little time and they kind of disintegrated to the iron. Too long and they burnt to the iron and we needed to clean it out.

My dad was pouring the batter and taking away the cookies, I had been operating the iron, the hubs was time things. It required quite a few attempts to get it , but they had been so great! I have tried to create them again on my own and it works. I would love to share the recipe, but the dang irons are so hard to discover. And pricey. Sooner or later, I would like to just make a cookie with the identical gaufrette taste.

For today though, I'm sharing these biscuits. I don't believe I had them when she made them, but they're from her novel.

It is such a fun recipe book to check through, also. There are so many handwritten pages, clippings and newspaper recipes which were taped into the book. I really like the way they used to compose recipes at the paper -- they'd the man who filed it's title and adorable little tales. It's so enjoyable to browse ! What another time in the world!

Anyways, I don't know where this recipe came out. The newspaper appears like it was on a flier out of their square dancing group or something (they were big into square dancing). It's undoubtedly from West Virginia, where they dwelt.

Either way, I view am so glad to finally talk about a recipe out of her book with you! I made a couple of changes to make them thicker and more puffier and they are delicious. There will be more to come from her recipe book, but for now enjoy the banana.

Return: 34-36 COOKIES


1 cup brown sugarpacked

1/2 cup sugar

1 egg

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 cup mashed bananas

1 1/2 cups all purpose flour

1 1/2 tsp cinnamon

1 tsp baking soda

1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

2 tsp cornstarch

3 cups old fashioned oats




3. Stir in yogurt.

4. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

5. Flatten dough just a little bitinto thick disks. They'll disperse a bit when boiled.


7. Remove from oven and cool on cookie sheet for 3-4 minutes, then move into cooling rack to finish cooling.
